Nobody agrees on what time it happened.
Penny says it was late afternoon because she had just taken something out of the oven.
Dr. Banty insists it was 4:17 precisely, although nobody remembers asking him.
Sammy claims he had already been monitoring the situation for several hours.
Nobody knows what situation Sammy means.
Nibbles remembers setting a table.
Steve remembers the wind stopping.
Ollie says very little about it.
Everyone agrees on Ella.
She had been asleep.
That part was normal.
Ella spent a significant portion of most afternoons appearing profoundly inconvenienced by consciousness.
She had chosen a warm patch of stone near the edge of Cosmic Compost and curled herself into a black shape barely distinguishable from the shadow beneath her.
Ollie was nearby.
He was also asleep.
Probably.
Then Ella opened her eyes.
Not slowly.
Not because someone called her.
Not because something made a noise.
Her eyes simply opened.
At the same moment, the Garden became quiet.
Not silent.
Quiet.
There is a difference.
The leaves still moved.
Somewhere, water still ran.
The insects had not disappeared.
But everything seemed to understand that it should make less noise.
Ella lifted her head.
Penny was the first to notice.
She stopped halfway through arranging a plate.
Nibbles noticed Penny stop.
Steve noticed Nibbles.
Sammy later claimed he noticed first.
Sammy claims many things.
Ella stared toward the far edge of the Garden.
Nothing was there.
At least, nothing anyone else could see.
Then Ella stood up.
That was when everyone stopped what they were doing.
Ella did not hurry.
Ella never hurried.
She simply rose, stretched once, and continued looking toward the same distant point.
Her tail went still.
Her ears tilted forward.
The purple pendant at her throat gave off the faintest glow.
Dr. Banty would later describe this as “a measurable energy fluctuation.”
No one remembers seeing him measure anything.
Victor lowered his head.
“…Meow?”
Penny reached up and touched the side of his leg.
“It’s okay.”
She sounded less certain than usual.
Steve moved closer.
Not toward whatever Ella was watching.
Toward everyone else.
Sammy disappeared into the Watchtower.
He insists this was a tactical repositioning.
Then Ollie opened his eyes.
He looked at Ella.
Then toward the distant edge of the Garden.
Then back at Ella.
Ollie did not move.
That was unusual too.
Nobody asked what was wrong.
Nobody asked Ella what she could see.
There are moments when curiosity is admirable.
This was not one of them.
And then someone noticed Gus.
He was standing near the boundary.
No one remembered seeing him there before.
No one had seen him arrive.
Of course, no one ever did.
Gus faced the same direction as Ella.
His cane rested against the ground.
He did not point.
He did not signal.
He simply watched.
Ella watched with him.
For perhaps a minute.
Maybe two.
Nobody is certain.
Then Ella’s ears relaxed.
The glow around her pendant faded.
She turned once, walked back to her warm stone, and lay down.
Gus remained where he was.
The wind returned.
Penny finished arranging her plate.
Nibbles went back to the table.
Victor said:
“Meow?”
“No idea,” Penny whispered.
Sammy emerged several minutes later and announced that the immediate threat had passed.
Steve asked what threat.
Sammy declined to reveal classified information.
Dr. Banty began explaining something about atmospheric disturbances.
Nobody listened.
Ollie closed his eyes again.
By supper, most of the Garden had returned to normal.
No creature had appeared.
No door had opened.
Nothing had crossed the boundary.
Nothing exploded.
Nothing vanished.
Nothing happened.
That was the part everyone remembered.
Because whatever Ella had been watching—
whatever had been standing beyond the Garden—
had apparently decided not to come any closer.

There are things in the Garden that frighten the residents.
There are other things that notice when Ella is watching.
